Our History
Our thanks to Jim Holohan for the following club history:
Alderley Park Cricket Club started life as Icicals Cricket Club in 1964, when it was formed as a section of Icicals, the ICI Pharmaceuticals social club at Alderley Park and Macclesfield. For 30 years the club was known as Icicals CC, but in 1994 was renamed Zeneca CC following the creation of Zeneca Pharmaceuticals and the subsequent change in name of Icicals Social Club to Zeneca Leisure. In 1999 the cricket club was renamed Alderley Park CC for the 2000 season. As the club were now well established in the structure of Cheshire cricket this name was chosen, with the approval of the renamed social club (ClubAZ), to avoid any further name changes that might arise from future business name changes.
Initially the club played its home matches at Ryleys School playing fields at Alderley Edge and then at Cranage near Holmes Chapel before the current ground at Alderley Park was opened in 1967. The club played friendly matches on Sundays and Wednesdays against local clubs for several years and played in mid-week cup competitions. In the early 1970s the playing strength increased and, encouraged by some good performances against stronger clubs, the club joined the Cheshire Conference in 1976. In 1974 Icicals had a great run in the Macclesfield Express Cup Final before losing to a strong Poynton side in the final at Bollington. Two breakaway leagues (Cheshire Competition and Cheshire Alliance) were formed for the 1977 season but Icicals remained in the Conference until the end of the 1984 season, defeating Halton in the League Cup Final in 1979 and remaining unbeaten in the 1980 season to claim the league title. In 1983 the club won the Nat West Shield (a Macclesfield and District midweek cup competition).
In 1985 Icicals joined the Cheshire Cricket Competition and fielded a second XI for the first time. The years 1986-88 proved to be the most successful period in the club’s history. A strong and experienced Second XI won the league cup in 1986 and 1988 and became league champions in 1987 and 1988. The First XI won their second ever championship by winning the league in 1988 and so the club picked up the Aggregate Trophy as well. In addition, Icicals won the most sporting club award in 1986 and 1987. The first match of the 1988 season saw one of the most remarkable feats ever seen in local cricket when young First XI opening bowler Ian Whelan clean bowled 10 Radbroke Hall batsmen to finish with figures of 10-48.
The club continued to enjoy cricket as members of the Cheshire Competition until the Cheshire Competition and the Cheshire Alliance merged for season 1998 (21 years after both leagues had broken away from the Cheshire Conference) to form the Oxbridge Cheshire Cricket Alliance, now known as the Shammah Nichols Cheshire Cricket Alliance. Both teams started in the lower divisions but in the first season the First XI gained promotion to Division 1 as runners up and the Second XI gained promotion from Division 4 to Division 3 as league champions. In 1998 both teams had good runs in cup competitions with the Second XI finishing as winners and the First XI runners-up. In 1999 both teams finished the season as runners-up in their leagues.
In 1998 the club followed the lead of several other clubs by recruiting an overseas player for the first time. Australian all-rounder Cameron Knight represented the club in 1998 and broke the club run scoring record by scoring 1098 runs in the season. Batsman Ritesh Jain, who had represented India at Under-19 level, replaced Cameron in 1999 and returned for a further three successful seasons with the club.
Despite the successful 1999 season the 2000 season was undoubtedly the worst in the club’s history due to ground and committee problems. With a leaner restructured committee in 2001 and some new enthusiastic committee members the future began to look brighter. After a moderate season on the field in 2001 all the hard work off the field brought its reward when in 2002 the First XI became champions of the Shammah Nicholls Premier Division and as a result Alderley Park Cricket Club were promoted to the Third Division of the Meller Braggins Cheshire League (in effect the sixth division out of nine in the Cheshire cricket structure).
The first XI finished a creditable fifth in their first season in the Meller Braggins Cheshire League but the Second XI, after a moderate three seasons in the Shammah Nicholls League, surpassed all expectations by winning the Division B East Championship trophy thanks to an amazing run of victories in the second half of the season. As a result the Second XI won promotion to Division A (in effect the fourth division in the Cheshire cricket structure) for the 2004 season.
Apart from a short break whilst the Second XI was developed in the mid 1980s, the club has played Sunday friendly matches as well as competitive Saturday cricket since about 1980. The club had played Wednesday evening cricket since its formation but as part of the restructuring in 2001 the club decided to concentrate on Sunday friendly cricket partly to develop younger players. The Sunday XI now play under the name Alderley Park Falcons.
Alderley Park Cricket Club is fortunate to have had a picturesque ground at the rear of the Mulberry’s sports centre at Alderley Park just off the A34. The ground boasts facilities to rival any in the local cricket having covers, a scorebox, outdoor nets, a mobile net, indoor nets in the Mulberry’s sports hall, an artificial wicket, a bowling machine and a “magic sponge” for mopping up surface water.
The 2009 season sees big changes for Alderley park Cricket Club, with a new committee and a brand new ground and pavillion that can be seen from the A34.
